I usually start my drawings and paintings with a pencil sketch, sometimes this is very detailed, other times it's a bit more loose. The pencil sketch can survive till the very end sometimes, whereas other times it will get buried in paint or wiped away. I tend to work very quickly and prefer to rub out mistakes, rather than focusing too long on proportions.
